On 13 October the 2022 China Mini/Micro LED Industry Ecosystem Conference and the release of the Mini/Micro LED Display Industry White Paper took place in Shenzhen, organised by the CMMA, the Mini and Micro LED display branch of the China Video Industry Association.
AET attended as a principal contributor to the white paper and as a vice-chairman unit of the association.
What the Document Covers
The white paper was written jointly by TCL, Leyard, AET and BOE, and covers product applications, markets, brands, key supply-chain components, materials, equipment and technology, together with a review of government policy support and of investment and financing in the sector.
On the investment side the numbers are large: between January and August 2022, more than thirty companies committed capital to Mini and Micro LED, totalling 41.5 billion yuan. That money is going into capacity, into materials and equipment, and into the parts of the chain that are still imported.
AET’s Position in the Technology
AET works on Mini and Micro LED through its academician workstation, with a focus on converting research into production rather than on demonstrations.
-
Gallium nitride red emission A directly emitting InGaN red Mini LED at 629 nm with an external quantum efficiency of 7.36%, which points to a nitride-based route for Micro LED rather than the conventional aluminium gallium arsenide device.
-
Quantum dot full-colour chips A high-efficiency photoluminescent route intended to cut the cost of emitting material and raise optical specification, which is what commercialisation depends on.
-
QCOB The company’s production process already combines quantum dot conversion with a laminated panel, which is where the research meets a shipping product.
-
3D nanocolumn chips Device work based on van der Waals epitaxy and lift-off transfer, part of a longer programme on next-generation emitting structures.
The distinction that matters commercially is between primary and secondary emission. A gallium nitride red chip emits directly; quantum dot technology converts light that has already been generated. The second route is cheaper and higher yield today, and the first is where the efficiency ceiling is higher. AET is working on both.
“Innovation is not a slogan in this industry,” the company said at the release. “It is whether a new material reaches a production line, and then whether it survives a customer’s installation for five years.”
